The annual Artisans in The Gardens exhibition returns

  • Written by The Times

The annual Artisans in The Gardens exhibition will return to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney  from October 26th to November 3rd, featuring forty of Australia’s most exciting emerging and  leading artists and craftspeople.

Set within the historic Lion Gate Lodge, this free event will showcase over 3,000 unique works  across diverse mediums, including sculpture, ceramics, hand-blown glass, jewellery, and  textiles.

The exhibition has become a standout event on Sydney’s arts calendar, drawing collectors and  art enthusiasts eager to see the work of both established and emerging artists. Now in its 24th  year, the exhibition is organised by Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens.

Sales will not only benefit the artists—20% of the funds raised will go to Foundation & Friends of  the Botanic Gardens, and from that amount, 20% will specifically support the Education Access  program in NSW. This program has the potential to provide over 700 students each year with  opportunities for hands-on learning in nature, plant science, and First Nations histories and  cultures at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney.

Pete Thomas, CEO of Foundation & Friends said, "Every artwork is available for purchase, and  this year, your support has even greater impact.

"Funds raised will help provide immersive learning experiences for students who may not usually  be able to access the Gardens, ensuring they participate in unique educational opportunities and  connect with nature,” said Mr. Thomas.

Kate Heywood, Head of Education Botanic Gardens Sydney said, “Through this program, we're  able to provide potentially life-changing experiences for children who may not otherwise have  access to outdoor education,"

The exhibition is known for its high-quality works and diverse artistic perspectives. With works  ranging from the small to the monumental, and prices from $20 to $20,000, there is an  opportunity for collectors of all levels to find something special.

Curator Libby Wright said, “This year we will once again showcase 40 impressive established  and emerging artists and artisans. With over 2,000 artworks for sale, we always have something  for everyone, from the very small to the very large. However, with over two-thirds of our artists  being new to the exhibition, 2024 will be distinct by the innovative and exciting techniques artists  are employing, in particular regard to reuse and their connection to the environment.”

The event also provides a platform for first-time exhibitors alongside well-known returning artists,  highlighting a range of styles and techniques that reflect Australia’s vibrant art scene. The variety  and accessibility of works contribute to making Artisans in The Gardens a unique fixture on the  cultural calendar, combining artistic excellence with community impact.

Tanya Reinli – Upcycled Glassware said “This exhibition is a special opportunity to showcase  how discarded bottles can be transformed into functional art. It is about giving new meaning,

purpose, and function to what already exist. Exhibiting here allows me to share my passion for  eco-conscious art and connect with a community that appreciates creativity rooted in  environmental responsibility.”

Interviews can be arranged with participating artists and curators, and a media preview is  scheduled prior to the exhibition’s opening.
