Pallet Racking: An Optimised Storage Solution for Modern Warehouses

Pallet Business

With the expansion of logistics production and e-commerce warehouse capacity has become one of the most important assets for companies. Hence pallet racking is now one of the most popular storage systems in contemporary warehouses.

What is Pallet Racking?

Pallet racking is an industrial warehouse storage system designed to store goods on pallets in horizontal rows and multiple vertical levels. Its main purpose is to help warehouses store more products in a more organised, accessible and manageable way.

A typical pallet racking system includes upright frames, beams, bracing, base plates, safety locks and other accessories, depending on load capacity, pallet size and operational requirements. Goods are stored on pallets and are usually handled by forklifts, reach trucks or other specialised material handling equipment

Common Types of Pallet Racking

There are many different types of pallet racking systems available, each suited to specific storage needs and warehouse operating models.

Choosing the right system helps businesses balance storage capacity, accessibility and operational efficiency.

  • Selective Pallet Racking: This is one of the most common pallet racking systems. It provides direct access to every pallet, making it suitable for warehouses with many SKUs and frequent inbound and outbound operations.
  • Double Deep Racking: This system stores pallets two positions deep, helping increase storage density and make better use of warehouse space. It typically requires a suitable reach truck or specialised forklift to access pallets stored in the second-deep position.
  • Drive-in Racking: This is a high-density storage solution where forklifts can drive directly into the racking lanes to place or retrieve pallets. It is suitable for warehouses that store large quantities of similar products, have fewer SKUs and need to maximise storage space.
  • Push Back Racking: This system allows multiple pallets to be stored in the same lane using rails or carts. It helps increase storage density while still maintaining relatively flexible inbound and outbound operations.
  • Pallet Flow Racking: This system uses gravity rollers to move pallets from the loading side to the picking side. It is suitable for FIFO inventory management, where the first pallet stored is the first pallet retrieved.
  • VNA Racking: Very Narrow Aisle racking is designed with narrow aisles to maximise storage capacity. It helps businesses make better use of warehouse height and increase the number of pallet positions within the same floor area.
  • Warehouse Racking Mezzanine: This solution combines an industrial racking system with a mezzanine floor to utilise warehouse height and create additional storage or operational space above the existing floor area.

In addition to traditional systems, pallet racking can also be integrated with automation solutions such as robot shuttle systems, AS/RS systems or warehouse management software.

Which Industries Is Pallet Racking Suitable For?

Pallet racking is suitable for a wide range of industries because it can be flexibly designed based on load capacity, product dimensions, inbound and outbound processes, and the specific operational requirements of each business.

  • Logistics and Distribution (3PL): These warehouses often prioritise Selective Racking or Double Deep Racking to balance storage density and accessibility for multiple customers and a wide range of SKUs.
  • Manufacturing: Manufacturing facilities require stable, heavy-duty racking systems to store raw materials and finished goods in large volumes.
  • Retail and E-commerce: These industries often manage fast-moving goods and seasonal inventory. Selective Racking, or a combination with shuttle systems for reserve storage areas, can be a suitable option.
  • Food, Beverage and Pharmaceuticals:These industries place strong emphasis on expiry date management. Pallet Flow Racking is highly suitable because it supports FIFO stock rotation and helps reduce the risk of expired inventory.
  • Cold Storage and Freezer Warehouses: These environments often prioritise high-density solutions such as Mobile Racking or Drive-In Racking, which help reduce the volume of space that needs to be chilled or frozen and can contribute to lower energy costs.

Choosing the right racking system depends on product characteristics, the number of SKUs, inbound and outbound frequency, and inventory rotation requirements. This is why businesses should consult warehouse racking specialists before making an investment.
