Nikon Is Developing Nine New Cinema Lenses and a Major ZR Firmware Update

The range will include the NIKKOR Z CINEMA 50mm T1.9 VV, with the other eight lenses yet to be revealed.
The new lenses will feature an image circle large enough to cover the V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor from RED Digital Cinema, which is larger than a full-frame sensor. Nikon says this is the first NIKKOR lens series to offer this capability.
The lenses will also feature a high-precision autofocus mechanism, designed to support professional production workflows.
Nikon says the new range will combine the rendering performance required for cinema with the practicality needed in professional production environments.
The announcement also highlights the developing relationship between Nikon and RED, with the new lenses designed to support the larger VV-format sensor developed by RED Digital Cinema.
New features coming to Nikon ZR
The update is scheduled for release in 2026 and will add several features aimed at filmmakers and content creators.
These include support for Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB when recording in H.265, giving users compact file sizes while retaining greater flexibility for colour grading.
The update will also add a new option for selecting the level of High ISO Noise Reduction when recording H.265 Log footage, allowing creators to adjust image rendering according to the look they want to achieve.
For users recording in R3D NE, Nikon's RAW format developed for its cameras using RED Digital Cinema's cinema colour science, the update will also introduce focus peaking during recording for more precise focus confirmation.
And there's more in development. Nikon says it is working on further ZR firmware updates that will add frequently requested features, including open gate recording and a desqueeze display for anamorphic lenses, with these features targeted for 2027.
The new NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV lenses remain in development, with further details to come from Nikon. Firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR is scheduled for release in 2026.
