Tips for Packing Electronics for Your Move

  • Written by NewsServices.com

Electronics and other gadgets are usually not heavy or bulky, but they require extra preparation to keep them safe for transportation. Electronics are usually expensive, so it's crucial that you take precautions to protect them from damage when you move to your new home.

If your resources make it possible for you to hire professional removalists to pack and transport your electronics, it is highly recommended that you choose this option. If you are opting for a DIY move, here are some tips that you can follow to prepare your electrics for moving day.

1. Back up any data

Before you start dismantling and packing your electronics, create a backup for all important data. This way, you can avoid losing important data in case your electronics are scheduled to go into storage or if you cannot access them for some time.

2. Gather manuals and documents

Gather all the manuals and documents that go with specific devices. Aside from providing useful information on how to disassemble and pack the device, you can use them again when you need to set up the device in your new residence. Keep the manual or documents in the same box or container as the device itself. If this is not possible, place them in a bag or folder and use labels, so you can locate them easily when you unpack.

3. Remove batteries and unplug wires/accessories

Before packing battery-powered devices, remove all batteries to prevent overheating and leakage. You also need to unplug wires and accessories to make it easier to pack the device and reduce the risk of damage. Roll cables and wires into coils, then label them using stickers or coloured tape that match the device that goes with it. You may also pack them in clear bags or containers before packing them into boxes with the device.

4. Cushion your devices

To avoid damages caused by movement during transportation, it is best to use various packing materials to pad your electronics. You can use bubble wrap and moving blankets to pad your gadgets when using moving boxes. This will minimise movement whilst they are transported, as well as lessen the impact in case an accident or unfortunate event occurs during the move.

5. Check the temperature

When possible, use climate-controlled storage spaces to protect your belongings, especially electronics and gadgets from extreme temperature change. Keep in mind that most electronics are sensitive to extreme temperature changes and are prone to damage when moisture occurs. Ideally, have your belongings stored in a dry and cool storage space.

Packing electronics is not always as simple as it looks. Aside from being heavy, bulky, or awkward-shaped, most electronics are fragile and prone to damage if not handled with the utmost care. If you do not have enough time to take the extra steps required to prepare and pack gadgets and electronics for the move, it's better to let professionals do the work. This way, you can rest assured that your electronics and gadgets are less susceptible to damage.
