8 Ways to Safely Move Heavy Items When Relocating

  • Written by: The Times

Moving to a new home can be a stressful and daunting process. Creating a to-do list, hiring a reliable removalist, cleaning your property to get your bond back from your landlord, and other essential responsibilities can be intimidating. Lifting heavy items, including coaches, desks, beds, washers, dryers, gym equipment, pianos, and drum kits, makes moving a formidable task.

Relocating to a new home can be the journey of a lifetime. However, moving heavy items can dampen this exciting life chapter. If your move requires shifting large items but you don’t know where to begin, there’s no need to worry.

This blog will explore eight ways to safely move heavy items when relocating, empowering you with the knowledge and confidence you need to take charge of your move and enjoy a seamless transition.

1.Believe In Mind Over Matter

Improvisation begins in your mind. Devising creative solutions is a mental tactic that can help you move heavy items safely and enjoy a hassle-free move.

For example, ensure that your couch fits into your door frame before lifting it. Measure your couch to determine if you can carry it through your door. Otherwise, you may have to improvise by flipping your couch so that it becomes parallel to your opening, and hope it fits. You may have to look for alternate openings if it doesn’t.

Remember, you don’t have to shoulder the entire burden alone. Consider asking a friend, family member, or a reliable Gold Coast local removalist to haul your heavy items. This strategy can provide a significant sense of relief during your move, knowing that you have a trusted, reliable support system in place.

  1. Dismantle Heavy Items

Bulky items don’t have to be intimidating. You can dismantle them and remove their attachments to facilitate easier moving.

For instance, a wooden desk with drawers filled with numerous items makes lifting a daunting task. Removing the drawers and their contents significantly reduces the weight of the desk, making it easier for you and another person to lift it.

Ensure that you follow this strategy before moving the desk. If you cannot remove the drawers, secure them with tape to prevent them from falling out during your move.

Dismantling applies to other heavy items, such as gym equipment, drum kits, entertainment units, washing machines, and workstations. It’s a strategy that lightens your burden and facilitates an easier relocation.

  1. Secure Your Belongings

Failing to protect your heavy belongings increases the risk of damaging them. You can prevent this scenario and ensure peace of mind by using bubble wrap, furniture blankets, or pads. Wrap them tightly so they don’t slip off during your move.

Sometimes, people lose their balance on the stairs or uneven surfaces. Consequently, they drop the item, sending its parts flying into the wall or surrounding areas. Consider creating barriers such as foam pads, cardboard sheets, corner guards, wall protectors, or temporary plywood panels, to prevent further damage and provide a sense of security.

  1. Pull Instead of Lift

Lifting isn’t the only strategy for hauling heavy items. If you have limited staffing, health issues, or if the item is hefty, consider pulling it across the floor. This strategy ensures efficient shifting of heavy items and better efficiency.

Ensure you place a large blanket or towel underneath the object, minimising friction, making pulling easier, and preventing costly floor damage.

  1. Pushing Is Key

Alternatively, you can push the heavy object placed atop a blanket or towel. Pushing can be easier for some people because it strains their backs less, providing them with the confidence to haul large items.

Unfortunately, jagged, rough, or uneven floors can make pushing challenging. Placing cardboard or an old blanket can help you move the object without refinishing the floor or replacing dilapidated, worn-out carpets.

Whether you prefer pulling or pushing, either strategy takes the burden off heavy lifting and helps make your relocation easier.

  1. Reach Out to Friends or Family

It bears repeating: you don’t have to do everything yourself. Moving is a significant undertaking that requires several people.

For this reason, consider reaching out to your friends or family members who live nearby. The number of people you need depends on the job’s scope and magnitude. If you’re moving only several heavy objects, one or two people may suffice. Complex moves require more people to ensure peace of mind.

Alternatively, hiring a trusted professional mover with extensive experience hauling heavy objects can be a game-changer. It takes the load off your shoulders and provides you with a sense of security for your relocation, knowing that your items are in safe, capable hands.

  1. Consider Using A Ramp

Stairs can hinder the lifting of heavy objects, complicate each move, and prompt you to think of creative solutions. A ramp could be the innovation you need for your relocation.

Many experienced Tweed Heads removalists consider a ramp as the equivalent of a large wedge that makes moving large, heavy objects easier. Check with your local loading and removalist ramp retailer,  who can recommend the appropriate ramp for your move.

If you don’t have access to a ramp, you can improvise using a plank or a large piece of wood. Place one end of your makeshift ramp securely on top of an incline and allow the object to slide onto it.

In terms of logistics, never haul heavy items alone on a stairway. Ensure that at least one person supports the heavy object as it slides down the ramp to prevent damage and potential accidents. Some homeowners prefer a dolly when lifting heavy objects on the stairs. In that scenario, ensure the person at the bottom of the dolly can secure the item so it doesn’t fall off.

Check if your local retail store sells specialised stair-climbing dollies, making this task easier and providing you with peace of mind.

  1. Use Rollers

Rollers are game-changers for your move. They can safely haul refrigerators, washing machines, fixtures, and other large items, significantly reducing your stress levels, enhancing safety, and providing valuable reassurance.

Consider using multiple rollers for huge items. Use strong, even rollers on even surfaces. Otherwise, add plywood sheets on jagged surfaces to stabilise them. Alternatively, round cylindrical structures, such logs or pipes, can resolve uneven surface issues when hauling large items.

Conclusion

Safely moving heavy items when relocating an office or moving house, should always be performed with at least two people. Doing everything yourself can increase the risk of damage, injury, delays, and costly replacements.

For these reasons, consider improvising, dismantling heavy items, securing your belongings, pulling, pushing, reaching out to friends or family, and using ramps or rollers to take charge of your move and enjoy long-term peace of mind.
