Stefano Lubiana Wines embrace sustainable practices for their award winning biodynamic vineyard

  • Written by Diane Falzon

For Stefano Lubiana Wines, in the heart of Tasmania’s wine region in Granton, Tasmania’s first and only biodynamic vineyard celebrates the beautiful region in the purest of forms.  The winery embraces environmentally holistic practices, which includes minimal intervention and combines that with modern techniques to create a wine to love.

Since 2010, Stefano Lubiana has been cultivating their vines using biodynamic methods where the wines are free of all synthetic treatments, additives and pesticides. The vineyard prides itself in using cosmic rhythms to ensure soil regeneration as well as effective vine care through all phases of the year’s seasonal cycles.

Stefano Lubiana also focusses on traditional and environmentally sensitive principals to create wines that have a unique and distinctive character, with free-flowing elegance and quality.

That ethos is extended to the way Stefano Lubiana Wines ship their wines interstate and overseas.

Since 2017, Stefano Lubiana Wines has joined forces with Biogone, using its landfill-biodegradable machine and hand pallet wrap, pallet toppers and packing tape which provides the same strength as conventional plastic but will biodegrade once disposed to landfill.

According to Monique Lubiana, Director, Stefano Lubiana Wines, because the vineyard delivers wine nationally to Victoria, NSW, Queensland and Western Australia, and ships to countries including the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Singapore and Japan, they needed packing materials, which are strong and versatile, but also biodegradable.

“It is so important for us as vineyard to be able to wholly embrace sustainable practices that complement our ethos. Biogone is such a great fit with our direction and delivery in that,” Monique says.

“We are hoping to be one of a number of biodynamic vineyards in Tasmania in the future because collectively we can do more than what we are able to achieve singly. We hope to be a resource and an inspiration for any farmer thinking of converting to organics or biodynamics or wanting to eliminate synthetics in food production.

“It’s not only about being biodynamic but we are also thinking about the planet across the board.  We've got 77KW of solar energy, our wines are vegan friendly and we're hoping to go carbon neutral in the near future. Using Biogone products helps us achieve our overall environmental goals.

“We do embrace other sustainable practices plus we own an electric forklift and I drive an electric car. As soon as tractors and utes go, we will convert to electric”.

“After 30 years in the industry, we continue to be fuelled to create exquisite wines to create enjoyment, love, joy, relaxation and thought.” Monique adds.

According to Ross Headifen, the General Manager of Biogone, “We are excited to be working with Stefano Lubiana Wines as they embrace the sustainable and responsible beliefs that we do here in Biogone. We all too often see quality products the producers have taken great care to produce and proud to supply, being wrapped in multiple layers of plastic wrap that is a problem for the environment. Stefano Lubiana Wines are taking this extra final step to ensure their wines are fully appreciated by their customers.”
