Only the Approved Electric Scooter Helmet Please

  • Written by The Times

Electric scooters have become an increasingly popular mode of transportation in recent years, particularly in urban areas where traffic has gotten horrendous. Additionally, riding an electric scooter saves the earth, so all the reasons to get on it!

As more people turn to electric scooters as a convenient and eco-friendly way to get around, it's important to remember that safety should always come first.

One of the most important safety measures that e-scooter riders should take is to wear an approved electric scooter helmet– yes, not just any helmet– but the approved helmet.

Let me walk you through the specific type of helmet that should be worn when riding an electric scooter.

What is an approved helmet?

An approved helmet is a type of helmet that meets certain safety standards set by government organizations. These standards ensure that the helmet provides adequate protection to the electric scooter rider in the event of an accident.

In Australia, the standard for bicycle helmets is AS/NZS 2063:2008. This standard specifies the design, construction, and performance requirements for helmets used for cycling, including electric scooters.

Therefore, when riding an electric scooter, it's recommended that riders wear a bicycle helmet that meets the AS/NZS 2063:2008 standard. These helmets are designed to be lightweight, comfortable to wear and most of all, provide adequate protection to the head in the event of a crash (we pray you don’t get into one, however one must always be prepared).

It's important to know that not all helmets are created equal. While some helmets may look similar, they may not provide the same level of protection as an approved helmet and safety is a priority especially in a fast electric scooter. Whatever incident may come, we hope the helmet will protect you at all costs when on your favorite e-scooter. But you have to do your part and make sure the helmet you have meets the AS/NZS 2063:2008 standard. Think of the street as a war zone, you have to always be ready for battle with your gear. It would simply be unwise to go unarmed.

What are these helmets made of?

Bicycle helmets, as what they are more famously called, are typically made from a hard outer shell and a softer inner liner. The outer shell is designed to absorb the initial impact in the event of a crash, while the inner liner helps to absorb and distribute the force of the impact.

It's important to choose a helmet that fits properly and is comfortable to wear. A helmet that doesn't fit properly may not provide the adequate protection you will need in the event of a crash, and it may also be uncomfortable to wear, which can be a distraction when riding. A helmet too big will move around your head while a helmet too small may be too tight.

So when you select a helmet, look for one that fits snugly on your head without being too big or too tight. The helmet should also sit level on your head, covering the forehead and the back of the head, and the chin strap should be fastened securely.

It's also important to choose a helmet that is appropriate for the type of riding you'll be doing. For example, if you plan to ride your amazing e-scooter at high speeds or on rough terrain, you may want to choose a helmet with a visor or extra padding for added protection.

Why is wearing an approved helmet important?

Wearing an approved helmet is one of the most important things e-scooter riders can do to protect themselves while riding. In the event of a crash– we pray this will not happen, but if it does– we pray again that the approved helmet can help absorb the impact and protect the rider's head from injury. Life is so precious, everything for the name of safety must be done to prevent accidents.

Studies have shown that wearing a helmet, especially the approved helmet, can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries. Many news reports of e-scooter accidents ending in major head injuries or death have factored in that there was a lack of helmet and safety gear. True enough, one study found that helmet use reduced the risk of head injury by 69% in cyclists who were involved in crashes.

In addition to providing protection, wearing a helmet can also help prevent injuries from minor accidents, such as falling off the e-scooter while turning a corner or hitting a bump in the road, which quite frankly may happen often.

Where can I get an approved helmet?

Mearth, the Pioneer in Australian Electric Scooters, carries 4 top-notch e-scooter series, the entry level S (Simple) Series, the long-range RS (Racing Sport) Series, the GTS Evo (Gran Turismo Scooter) Series and the latest, most futuristic, the Cyber.

With great powers of these fast electric scooters, the need for an approved helmet had to be met. Thus, the birth of the Mearth Airlite Electric Scooter Helmet ($69 AUD) and the Mearth Nutshell Helmet ($59 AUD), both of which meets the AS/NZS 2063:2008 standard, which is designed to provide adequate protection to the head if an accident arises – again, we pray not!

Wearing an approved helmet that fits properly and is comfortable to wear is an essential safety measure for e-scooter riders. So go on over to the official site of Mearth to avail of the helmets you need! Be safe, always!
