5 Signs You Should Update Your Business Hardware

  • Written by Brigitte Evans

Companies today have become dependent on technology in its many forms to ensure productivity, security, and employee satisfaction. As a business, it’s your responsibility to provide your teams with the latest, most relevant devices, be it laptops and mobile phones, or noise-canceling headphones and external hard drives. The list goes on, but the focus should be on the kind of business hardware that truly needs updating regularly. Much like you cannot do much with an outdated application on your phone, you should be mindful of the technology your teams use every day.

Replacing them too soon, however, can have negative implications on your budget without ever truly improving your employees’ productivity and business efficiency. Here are a few telltale signs to recognize when the time is right to start updating your business hardware.

Impossible software updates

Outdated hardware has many disadvantages, one of them being its inability to take on software updates and new operating systems. You often cannot run advanced programs that require ongoing updates, security patches, and improvements on old and slow hardware tools. Too many companies ignore this issue and continue using outdated software because it seems harmless enough on the surface.

However, every piece of outdated software is a gateway to your sensitive information, and an opportunity for an experienced hacker to get hold of your most important business documents. As soon as your hardware can no longer handle more advanced software versions of your existing programs, you need to move on toward more advanced tools

Jeopardized security

Your dedicated business network can be a source of vulnerabilities for your employees and your business data, or it can be a safe haven for you to conduct all your interactions, research, and communication. Alas, choosing outdated hardware for conducting all of those processes is risky precisely because you expose your business to malicious hackers via your unprotected network.

Today, more companies are investing in a dedicated firewall appliance that serves as a security barrier for your business network and data. Whether you have an entire IT team at your disposal or not, modern hardware solutions are often simplified, yet powerful enough to be used by small and large enterprises alike, with simple and low-cost maintenance needs.

Costly repairs for your existing hardware

You’re used to reaching for your current smartphone when it’s time to make a client conference call, or set up a reminder for sending invoices to your customers. However, the battery is draining faster than ever, and you no longer have enough space to add contacts or store files on your phone. The same can apply to your laptop or any other piece of hardware you’re using. If you continuously invest in repairing and improving your current hardware, you might be straining your budget for the long haul.

As soon as the cost of repair becomes higher than the cost of purchasing new hardware, you’ve already lost money on these maintenance processes. It’s best to find new devices and more advanced hardware options for your teams and yourself, to make sure that their performance can meet your business needs without burdening your budget.

Mismatched advanced software with your tools

More advanced solutions that businesses use nowadays require more robust hardware in return. For example, if you ask your graphic designers to use an old version of the same laptop they own, they’d probably laugh just imagining the scenario in which every program would crash and their laptop would simply be useless when faced with these advanced software tools.

Regularly talk to your employees to evaluate when it’s time to move on and find more recent models they can use in their daily work. You IT experts need advanced tools to do their jobs efficiently, but the same goes for every sector in your business, from creative souls to your customer support agents. That is why regular performance evaluations paired with maintenance will reveal the perfect moment to purchase new hardware for your business team.

Decreasing productivity

What is the final outcome when your employees don’t have access to the right software tools to do their jobs, the right level of security and protection, and it takes too long for their existing software to start? Reduced productivity. Frustrated employees that cannot work normally will then lead to unsatisfied customers, delayed responses, and subpar business performance.

This often happens as the very last symptom of poor hardware performance, so you’ll probably notice a few of the aforementioned issues before you actually pinpoint this as the cause of your employees’ frustration. Luckily, once you provide them with the needed upgrades, they’ll be able to go back to work seamlessly.

Knowing when the time is right to upgrade is half the battle. These investments made at the right time have the potential to reduce your operational expenses and let you focus on your daily challenges with ease. Now it’s up to you to find the most suitable upgrades available for your team and help your business grow with the right tech at your disposal.
