Key Tips for Great Visiting Etiquette

  • Written by Cara Barilla; Educational Columnist & Journalist

Visiting someone's house is a great experience and an opportunity to build a closer relationship with the host. It is also an opportunity to exchange respect, consideration within the art of positive etiquette and good manners.

Positive etiquette can create a welcoming atmosphere as a house guest and leave a lasting impression on the host. Here are ten methods to offer positive etiquette when visiting someone's house.

  • Be punctual

Being on time is one of the most important aspects of good etiquette. Arriving on time shows respect for the host's time and effort put into the preparation for your visit. If you are running late, make sure to inform the host in advance to avoid any inconvenience or misunderstanding. In today’s society it may be hard to communicate, being such a fast paced environment. A simple message of thought however will go a long way.

  • Dress appropriately

Dressing appropriately for the occasion is crucial to show respect for the host's effort and self reflection. If you are unsure about the dress code, it is better to ask the host in advance to avoid any awkward situations. Always remember that it's better to be overdressed and conservative than underdressed.

  • Bring a gift

Bringing a small gift such as flowers, chocolates, or a bottle of wine is a great way to show appreciation and thanks for the host's hospitality and efforts. Make sure to choose a gift that is appropriate and thoughtful.

  • Use good table manners

Using good table manners is a sign of respect for the host's home and the food they have prepared. Always wait for the host to invite you to the table, offer to help with setting the table or clearing dishes, and use utensils appropriately. Make sure to chew with your mouth closed, give others their time to talk, offer to pass dishes, elbows off the table, maintain respectable body posture and avoid talking with your mouth full.

  • Compliment the host

Complimenting the host is a great way to show appreciation for their effort and hospitality. Make sure to compliment the food, the décor, and the atmosphere. However, make sure to be sincere with your compliments and avoid being overly effusive.

  • Respect their house rules

Every house has its own set of rules, such as removing shoes before entering, no smoking, or pet restrictions. Make sure to follow these rules and respect the host's boundaries. If you are unsure about the rules, it is better to ask the host in advance.

  • Be mindful of your belongings

Being mindful of your belongings is an essential aspect of good etiquette. Keep your handbag and belongings high from children just in case you may have hazardous objects in your bag; for example: medications. Make sure to keep your belongings in a designated area and avoid cluttering the host's space. If you are bringing any food or drink, make sure to ask the host's permission before consuming it. Ask where the most suitable place to keep your bag / belongings should be kept.

  • Offer to help

Offering to help the host with the preparation or cleanup is a great way to show gratitude for their hospitality. Make sure to offer help genuinely, and avoid insisting if the host declines your offer.

  • Avoid controversial topics

Avoiding controversial topics such as politics, religion, or personal opinions is crucial to maintain a pleasant and respectful atmosphere. If someone brings up a controversial topic, try to change the subject or politely decline to participate in the discussion.

  • Send a thank-you text.

Sending a thank-you message after the visit is a great way to show appreciation for the host's hospitality. Make sure to include specific details about what you enjoyed during your visit and express your gratitude for their effort and hospitality.

Overall, positive etiquette when visiting someone's house is essential to create a welcoming atmosphere and build a closer relationship with the host. Being punctual, dressing appropriately, bringing a gift, using good table manners, complimenting the host, respecting their house rules, being mindful of your belongings, offering to help, avoiding controversial topics, and sending a thank-you text are some of many methods to give good positive etiquette when visiting someone's house. These methods will not only make your visit more enjoyable but will also leave a lasting impression on the host. Remember, good etiquette is not only about following rules, but also about being genuine, respectful, and grateful.
