Food For Change is revolutionising charity standards

  • Written by Media Release

National not-for-profit, Food For Change is revolutionising charity standards, with the launch of its new app in partnership with grocery giant, IGA.

Set to roll-out nationally across 800+ IGA stores this year, Food For Change aims to deliver over 500,000 meals to hungry Australians.

The IGA Food Rescue App connects food rescue organisations with their local IGA supermarket, where unsellable but usable produce can find their “second home”.

Food For Change Co-Founder, Matt Donovan said the IGA Food Rescue App came to life off the back of a recent Brisbane Random Hacks of Kindness (RHOK) event, with the help of Digital8 General Manager, Joe McCord.

At the event Joe and the Digital8 team offered to build the app for us – pro bono. I was blown away by the offer and without their hard work and time, the app would never have been ready to present to IGA,” he says.

Digital8’s assistance was invaluable and their advice helped us mould a design concept specifically for IGA to rescue food that they were currently putting to the waste stream.

The success was overwhelming and during the pilot stage in NSW, the app was able to rescue 30,000 meals in just six months across three IGA supermarkets.”

Mr Donovan said the app has allowed Food For Change to make a significant positive impact in local communities.

Technology allows us to keep our costs down and work remotely with IGA. This helps us directly deliver meals to the 1 in 10 Australians that seek food relief annually.”

To assist not-for-profits like Food For Change, Digital8 has announced a Community Impact Fund – a $200,000 investment into the delivery of web technology that will have a direct positive impact on the community.

Digital8 seek to empower and enable positive organisations, such as Food For Change, with defined community impact goals so that they can leverage the internet, social media and digital technology to help the organisation succeed,” said Mr McCord.

These organisations are usually able to clearly demonstrate how world class digital projects could drastically improve their success, yet are unable to fund these projects due to the costs associated, as well as the limited and extremely competitive existing funding options available to them.

In short, it is our way to give back to the world,’ he says.

Digital8 are a leading full servicing digital agency based in Brisbane.
