MooGoo to launch alcohol-based hand sanitiser

  • Written by: Niki Clark

MooGoo CEO and founder, Craig Jones, has revealed the brand “is breaking its own rules” by deviating from its ethos of using ingredients as close to nature as possible by manufacturing a new hand Sanitiser Gel with alcohol in a bid to stamp out coronavirus.

Mr Jones says the company has been inundated with requests for an alcohol-based hand sanitiser over the past six weeks, and the first batch of 10,000 bottles will go on sale this week.

“We normally make natural products for people with skin problems, but during this emergency, we have turned some manufacturing to an alcohol handwashing gel to address the national shortage,” he says.

“We wanted to make the best quality sanitiser we could that was as gentle on hands as possible. Pure alcohol isn’t actually that effective – it needs to be mixed with water and to try and make it as gentle on the hands as we can, we are using Australian Grain Alcohol at the lower end of the recommended range.

“A gel is better than liquid as it’s going to be on contact with the skin for longer before it evaporates, so therefore has better efficacy. The Government recommends using between 60 and 90 percent alcohol for best effectiveness, and we are using 63 percent to maximise efficacy while minimising the stripping of moisture from the hands.

“We have combined it with aloe vera and glycerine to help soothe and moisturise hands.”

Social media is also awash with eczema and psoriasis sufferers begging for advice on what to use on their cracked and inflamed skin, with many complaining abrasive hand-sanitisers and constant handwashing is making their skin inflamed, itchy and unsightly – see attached case study, Cherie Alexander.

MooGoo sells a tube of its a cult $18.50 Eczema and Psoriasis Cream every two minutes and the business has an annual turnover of $20m.

Mr Jones can talk about the sales spike and most popular products, as well as giving tips on how to keep hands (and skin overall) in top condition. He can also explain what products to look for and avoid when it comes to moisturisers and skin care in general, including ways to stay moisturised over the cooler months.
